Wellington

Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, is located near the southernmost point of the North Island on the Cook Strait. It is a small city with a waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour, and colourful timber houses on surrounding hills. The iconic red Wellington Cable Car departs from Lambton Quay for the Wellington Botanic Gardens. The nickname Windy Wellington comes from the strong winds that blow through the Cook Strait. Wellington is cool, friendly, and beautiful, with excellent educational facilities, an international student culture, and a thriving cultural and social scene. Wellington has topped Deutsche Bank’s list of the 50 cities with the highest quality of life, making it the world’s most livable city. Wellington was ranked as the least polluted, fourth best in terms of property-to-income ratio and commuting, and fifth best in terms of climate, earning it the top spot overall. The Economist 2017 Safe Cities Index ranks Wellington as the 16th safest city in the world. Wellington is also ranked second in the world for personal safety. All of New Zealand’s universities are also ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings. Studying in New Zealand is thus an excellent career option.
